Return to Of Being and of Meaning
Paintings
by Deborah Hillman
Deborah
Hillman holds a Ph.D. in anthropology and has worked as both an ethnographer
and a counselor/therapist. She joined The Lifwynn Foundation in the early
1990s and engaged in its group work (social self-inquiry). In 2002 she moved
from New York City to Montpelier, Vermont, where much of her attention is
devoted to making art. Her abstract images have personal roots but allude to
broader themes: connectedness, harmony, nuance, flux, and awareness of hidden
realities. She rarely plans a work in advance, but follows an intuitive
approach, allowing the process, itself, to reveal "what's there."
She collected and edited some of the unpublished writings of Hans Syz [see Experience
and Concept: The Notebooks of Hans Syz, available through The Lifwynn
Foundation], and although she feels a strong bond of kinship with his vision,
her paintings are not deliberate illustrations.
